If you are searching for exactly what is a "girlie bar" or what is a "girly bar" then its an simple answer: "Girlie bar" is a regional umbrella term for any establishment where you pay for female company. In Cambodia and the Philippines, the term specifically refers to basic, open-air venues without a stage or dancing-the exact same setup that Thailand calls a "beer bar." The differences between all these venues come down to three things: if there is a stage and dancing, how the girls are recruited and priced, and which local slang you are using.

Travel Warning WARNING: Be careful what you wear. If you wear loose fitting baggy shorts, the girls will be getting your money much easier. They are very persuasive, and if you sit at a girly bar with cash in your pockets, you will fail at fighting them off. "Up to you," as they say, but keep your money secured. Recommendation: Never pay the bar fine to the mamasan before you have agreed on the price and the limits with the girl directly.

The Venue Levels

The Normal Bar You sit and drink. Sometimes local girls or freelancers are there to get your attention and your money. There is no system and no bar fine; you just chat them up, buy them a drink, or try to fight them off.

Girlie Bar / Beer Bar Also called a "lady bar" in Cambodia. This is the absolute bottom level of the pay-for-play venues and the best example of a girly bar. They usually feature plastic stools, an open-air or open-front layout, a central bar counter, and hostesses in matching numbered uniforms who sit with you and chat. There is no stage and no dancing. You buy lady drinks (which are marked up so the girl gets a commission cut). If you fancy her, you pay a bar fine to the cashier to take her out. Expect cheap drinks, a cheap bar fine, low pressure, and no choreography.

Bar de Hôtesses / Hostess Lounge This term has different meanings depending on the region. In Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, and Korea it's a step up from a basic girlie bar: an air-conditioned lounge where girls often line up on arrival so you can pick one. It uses a sit-and-drink format, sometimes with "hostess club" pricing (hourly set fees plus tips). In Pattaya and Thailand, the term is used for the mid-tier between a beer bar and a go-go-more classy than a beer bar, but without stage dancers.

  • Naming Trap: A Japanese "hostess bar" (kyabakura) has no bar fine and usually no sex implied. A Korean "room salon" is a karaoke-plus-hostess format.

Go-Go Bar This is the "show" level. Indoors, dark, loud, and heavily air-conditioned. There is a stage with girls in bikinis rotating shifts, numbers pinned on, and a mamasan aggressively working the room for drinks. Drinks and bar fines here are two to three times the girlie bar rates. There is more performance, more competition for attention, and significantly more pressure to spend cash.

Other Venues

Regional Differences: Where are Girlie Bars Most Common?

Where girlie bars are most common is Thailand, by a huge margin. Pattaya alone has thousands of them (referred to locally as beer bars), plus massive scenes in Bangkok and Phuket.

The second biggest hub is Cambodia (Phnom Penh’s Street 136 / Riverside, and Siem Reap), where the standard girlie bar format is the dominant venue type.

Third is the Philippines (Angeles City's Fields Avenue and Manila's P. Burgos or Malate). However, the Philippine scene leans heavily toward indoor go-go bars and KTVs rather than cheap open-air girly bars.

Vietnam, Laos and Indonesia have smaller scenes that rely mostly on the enclosed KTV format. Conversely, go-go bars are highly concentrated in Thailand and the Philippines, with only a small spread around Cambodia.
