District 1 (Ho Chi Minh City)
District 1 is the commercial center of Ho Chi Minh City, also called Saigon. After dark, parts of the central area have beer bars, hostess bars, karaoke lounges, massage shops and freelancers looking for customers. It is not one continuous red-light district like parts of Amsterdam. The nightlife is spread across several streets, and commercial prostitution is illegal in Vietnam.
Some streets are mainly for backpackers getting drunk. Others have Japanese restaurants, hostess lounges and expensive private karaoke rooms. Prices and arrangements vary between venues.

Nightlife Areas in District 1
Bui Vien Walking Street
Bui Vien Walking Street is the loud backpacker strip. Cheap beer, street food, clubs, promoters and tourists drinking until late. The main walking section becomes pedestrian-only on weekend evenings.
There are massage shops and freelancers around the surrounding streets and alleys, but Bui Vien is mainly a busy nightlife street. Plenty of women there are ordinary customers having a night out.
The main strip gets crowded and noisy. Drink prices vary between bars, and phones and bags are exposed to theft in the crowds and beside the road.
Pham Ngu Lao and De Tham
Pham Ngu Lao, De Tham and Bui Vien form the main backpacker area. Budget hotels, travel agents, restaurants, bars and massage shops are packed close together.
This is a convenient base for nightlife within walking distance of the room. Hotel visitor policies vary, including at cheap places. Some allow registered visitors, while others restrict them or charge extra.
Le Thanh Ton and Thai Van Lung
Le Thanh Ton and Thai Van Lung form the area commonly called Little Japan. Japanese restaurants, small bars and hostess lounges sit along the streets and inside narrow alleys.
Some hostess venues charge for company, drinks and time. An hourly rate may cover only the company, with hostess drinks, service charges and private rooms billed separately.
Little Japan also has ordinary restaurants and bars. Curtains and a Japanese sign do not mean a place sells sex.
Hai Ba Trung
Hai Ba Trung is a long street with hotels, restaurants, shops and nightlife. Parts of the central area have been known for hostess bars, but it is not one continuous adult strip.
Businesses close, change names and reopen. Old forum reports can describe places that no longer exist.
Pasteur Street
Pasteur Street has restaurants, ordinary drinking places and hostess-style venues. The setup depends on the individual bar.
Lady drinks, bottles and rounds ordered for the table can make the bill much larger than the price of a beer. Some bars explain these charges clearly; vague menus and unexplained orders leave room for disputes.
A recommendation from a stranger or driver may involve commission.
Ton That Tung and Nguyen Trai
Ton That Tung and Nguyen Trai have shops, restaurants and nightlife nearby. They are not continuous streets of brothels or hostess bars.
Private karaoke and drinking venues have their own arrangements. A street name alone tells little about what a particular business offers.
Hot Toc and Massage Shops
Hot toc means haircut. Most haircut shops are exactly that.
Some adult businesses use barber-shop or massage advertising, which is why the term appears in Saigon nightlife discussions. The advertised haircut, shampoo or massage price covers that service, not an automatic sexual extra.
Massage businesses also operate around Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Vo Van Tan, including areas outside the old District 1 center. Many are ordinary therapeutic spas. Private rooms and frosted windows are common in normal massage businesses too.
Karaoke and KTV Lounges
KTV usually means private-room karaoke. Customers rent a room, order drinks and sing. Some venues offer hostess company, while others serve friends, families and work groups.
Room hire, bottles, hostess drinks, tips and service charges can all appear separately on the bill. Some venues also have a minimum spend.
Hostess company means company inside the venue. Leaving together or providing sexual services is a separate matter, not something included in the price of her drinks.
Prices and Charges
These figures are rough estimates, not a verified 2026 price list. Charges depend on the venue, person, duration and arrangement.
| Service or venue | Approximate price in VND |
|---|---|
| Beer at a hostess bar | 50,000-150,000 |
| Hostess company for one hour | 500,000-1,000,000 |
| Advertised massage with a happy ending | 500,000-1,500,000 |
| Reported full-service massage arrangements | 1,500,000-5,000,000 |
| Reported freelancer arrangements | 1,000,000-3,000,000 |
Room charges, drinks, tips and transport may be separate. A cheap advertised massage can become an expensive visit once extra charges appear. See prostitution prices and Escort extras.
Legal Reality and Scams
Buying and selling sexual services are prohibited in Vietnam. A venue operating openly does not make sexual services legal, and foreign visitors are subject to local law.
Common nightlife problems include:
- Commission bars: Strangers and drivers may earn money for bringing customers into expensive venues.
- Drink charges: Hostess drinks, bottles and rounds can appear on the bill without a clear explanation.
- Upfront deposits: Unknown online contacts can disappear after receiving payment.
- Fake police: Scammers may claim to be police and demand an immediate cash payment.
- Phone and bag theft: Crowded nightlife streets and passing motorbikes create opportunities for thieves.
Bill disputes can become threatening, particularly when staff or security block the exit. Hotel staff and the authorities can provide help; a physical confrontation can make the situation worse.

Other Nightlife Options
Nguyen Hue Walking Street has restaurants, evening crowds and ordinary nightlife.
Chill Skybar at AB Tower and Saigon Saigon Rooftop Bar at the Caravelle offer rooftop drinks. Prices are higher than in backpacker bars, and opening hours, reservations and dress rules depend on the venue.
These places offer a different evening from hostess bars and private karaoke rooms. Normal risks around drinks, valuables and transport still apply.
Hotels and Visitors
Hotel visitor policies can include identification, registration, visiting hours and additional charges. Some properties restrict visitors altogether.
Accommodation providers must register foreign guests. This applies beyond budget hotels, and an expensive room does not remove registration requirements.
