Mamasan

The Mamasan Sex Guide describes the role of the Mamasan a woman who manages, supervises or organizes workers in parts of the Asian nightlife, sex and entertainment industry. The term is most commonly used in connection with Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau and other areas of Asia and mostly in massage parlors

A Mamasan usually oversees the staff, introduces customers, creates schedules, settles disputes and ensures that a bar, club or entertainment venue runs smoothly. In many nightlife districts, she’s the bridge between customers, management and the workers themselves and tries to keep everyone motivated.

The term was popularised by the bar scenes of Bangkok, Pattaya, Manila, Angeles City, Patpong, Nana Plaza, Makati and other well known Asian nightlife districts. The Mamasan, known by experienced travellers as the one that knows everybody and everything that is happening inside the venue.

In a bar or club a good Mamasan can be super powerful. Long-time customers often form friendly relationships with Mamasans who may assist newcomers in understanding local customs, nightlife etiquette and venue rules.

The term is most closely associated with Asia, but similar management positions can be found at nightlife venues around the world and papasan is the male version of mamasan.
