Beer bar
Beer bar usually means a bar serving beer, but in places like Pattaya the same words often mean a hostess bar where customers drink with working girls. Same sign, different business. An ordinary pub sells you drinks. A hostess beer bar also makes money from lady drinks and sometimes bar fines.
These bars are often open-fronted, with stools, fans, a television and a pool table. You sit down, order a beer and talk with whoever comes over. There is usually less stage entertainment than in a go-go bars, although every place runs things its own way.
Not every woman drinking in a bar is working, and not every waitress offers company or sex. Don't assume.

Sex Worker Beer Bar vs Normal Beer Bar
A normal pub makes its money selling booze to guys who want to drink. A red-light beer bar makes its money selling the illusion of company.
There are no stages, no dancing poles, and no cover charges. You sit down, order a beer, and see who you click with. The business model is purely about volume and low commitment. The girls are mostly independent contractors renting a stool. Their job is to hustle you for lady drinks, and if you like them enough, you pay the house to release them from their shift so you can take them back to your room.
Which Countries Have "Prostitution" Beer Bars
The beer bar setup described here is particularly associated with Thailand. You will find it around Pattaya, including Soi Buakhao, Soi 6, LK Metro and parts of Walking Street. Beer bars also form part of the nightlife in Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai.
Related hostess-bar setups can be found elsewhere, but don't expect the Thai system everywhere:
- Philippines: Girlie bars and bikini bars, particularly around Angeles City and Barretto. Ask whether any quoted release fee includes the worker's own fee.
- Cambodia: Hostess bars around places such as Phnom Penh. Drink commissions and arrangements for leaving vary between venues.
- Vietnam: The term bia ôm is associated with drinking and female company. It does not mean every beer shop or bia hơi serves the same purpose.
Bars where customers meet freelancers exist in many other countries. That does not make them Thai-style beer bars, and it does not mean the bar arranges sexual services.
A bar fine is not a legal loophole that makes prostitution lawful. Local laws still apply.
How Things Work in a "Beer Bar"
Sit down, check the prices and order your own drink first. You can drink alone. Buying somebody company is optional.
If a girl joins you, she may ask for a lady drink. Ask the price before agreeing, particularly if her friends start joining the table. One drink for one girl can quickly become six drinks for people you never invited.
The money usually falls into separate parts:
- Your drinks: What you order for yourself.
- Lady drinks: Drinks bought for the worker, usually carrying a commission.
- Bar fine: A payment to the venue allowing a worker to leave her shift, where that arrangement is offered.
- Her own fee: Any separately agreed payment for her time or services.
- Room and transport: A short-time room, taxi or hotel guest charge may be another expense.
A bar fine does not include sex or buy somebody's consent. Agree directly on what is offered, the time and the money before paying. Either person can decline.
Beer Bar Prices
There is no worldwide beer bar tariff. Thai baht prices only make sense for Thailand, and even there the difference between bars can be considerable.
Figures commonly quoted for cheaper Pattaya beer bars include 120 to 250 THB for lady drinks and 300 to 700 THB for a bar fine. Treat these as rough examples, not guaranteed current prices.
Workers set their own terms. Figures such as 1,000 to 2,000 THB for short-time or 2,000 to 4,000 THB for long-time should not be treated as a menu applying to every girl or bar.
Ask what the total covers. Paying the bar fine and then discovering you disagree about everything else is a bloody expensive way to start the evening.
Other Similar Places
Beer Bars vs Go-Go Bars
A go-go bar centres on dancers and stage shows. A beer bar usually centres on sitting, drinking and talking. Some venues mix the two.
Neither name tells you whether workers leave with customers, what a bar fine costs or whether private rooms exist.
Girlie Bars and Hostess Bars
Girlie bar is a loose term for a bar employing women to entertain customers. A hostess bar sells company, conversation and drinks. Some overlap with sex work; others explicitly do not.
In Japan, hostess clubs and snack bars have their own seating charges, time limits and drink systems. Paying for hostess company is not a booking for sex.
Freelancer Bars
A freelancer bar is somewhere independent workers meet customers. They may be ordinary paying customers themselves, rather than staff.
There may be no bar fine because the person is not leaving a shift. Buying a drink still doesn't establish any private arrangement.
Gentlemen's Clubs
Around Pattaya, gentlemen's club often means an indoor hostess lounge with sofas, air conditioning and drinks. Elsewhere, the same name may mean a strip club or a private members' club. Check before you walk in expecting the Pattaya version.
Brothels and Laufhäuser
A brothel has rooms used for sexual services on the premises. In a German Laufhaus, workers generally rent rooms and arrange appointments directly.
That is different from sitting in a beer bar and paying to take somebody elsewhere. See Walk-up brothel, Brothel prices and Brothel etiquette.
Beer Bar Scams
Unwanted lady drinks: You agree to buy one drink, then somebody orders shots for her friends. Be clear about what you are buying. You don't owe the whole bloody bar a round.
Padded bills: Extra drinks appear in the bill basket or the price changes when you ask to leave. Check each round and pay regularly. Keep your receipts if there is a disagreement.
Unclear drink prices: A double, cocktail or special lady drink may cost more than the price you noticed on the menu. Ask before ordering.
Bar fine confusion: The venue's fee and the worker's fee are different charges unless explicitly sold as a combined arrangement. Establish that before handing over money.
Short-time and long-time arguments: These labels mean different things to different people. Agree on the actual time, rather than assuming somebody will stay until breakfast.
If a bill dispute turns threatening, don't start swinging at the staff. Move somewhere public and seek help. Keep your drink attended and your wallet out of other people's hands.
