History

Loi Kroh Road has been known as a red-light district for many years. Its bar street and brothel business is often linked to American soldiers visiting northern Thailand during the Vietnam War.

Later, the bars started serving backpackers, expats and tourists visiting the Night Bazaar. By the 2010s, some long-term visitors were already saying the street had become quieter.

There are fewer large soapy massage places than before. Some business has moved to dating apps, smaller massage shops and places in Santitham.

Beer Bars

Girls usually sit outside the bars and call passing men "handsome." You can stop for a drink or keep walking.

There is a small entertainment complex with a boxing stadium and several open-air beer bars. Beer bars are more common here than go-go bars.

You sit down, play pool and buy lady drinks. If a girl agrees to leave with you, the bar may charge a bar fine. Her own fee is separate.

Shamrock Pub, Annie Bar and Friends Corner have been mentioned as ladyboy bars. Workers and bar names can change.

Massage Parlors

There are many massage shops on and around Loi Kroh Road. Some offer ordinary massage, while others advertise erotic services.

The house may charge for the massage or room separately from anything agreed with the worker.

Street Prostitution

Freelancers have been reported around Loi Kroh Road after the bars close, including near the 7-Eleven, Kotchasarn Road, Moon Muang Road and Tha Phae Gate.

Some are ladyboys. Appearance alone does not tell you somebody's gender or whether they are looking for customers.

Freelancers are also mentioned in reports about clubs such as Zoe in Yellow, Spicy and Tawandang. Club names and opening arrangements change.

Older reports describe cheap brothels in Santitham where customers chose a worker and went to a nearby hotel. Prices of 400-600 THB for half an hour, but also dirty rooms and places refusing farangs.

Gay Clubs and Gay Cruising

Much of Chiang Mai's gay nightlife is around the Night Bazaar and Santitham rather than Loi Kroh Road.

Adam's Apple Club in Santitham is known for male stage shows. Older descriptions quote a 400 THB bar fine, but current charges need confirming.

6ixcret and Ram Bar are known for drag and kathoey shows. Club One Seven and House of Male appear in descriptions of gay saunas, with pools, steam rooms and private areas.

Guys also use Grindr and Blued to meet people. Some go to mixed clubs such as Spicy or Warm Up.

Prices

Drinks and services cost more than they did years ago. Bar fines and the girl's fee are separate charges, and prices vary between bars.

Girl-friendly hotels are in Chang Khlan area, just past the Night Bazaar. Other hotels around Chiang Mai also allow visitors.
