Tinder

Tinder is a location-based social discovery mobile app that allows users to like (swipe right) or dislike (swipe left) other users. When two users both swipe right on each other, a "match" is created and they can begin chatting through the app.

The app is widely known as a dating and hookup platform and is often used for casual dating and short-term relationships. User profiles typically contain photos, a short biography written by the user, and sometimes links to social media accounts such as Instagram or Spotify.

Originally incubated inside Hatch Labs, the app launched in 2012 and quickly became one of the most popular dating applications in the world. Tinder was among the first major "swiping apps", where users browse through profiles using a simple left or right swipe motion to indicate interest.

Tinder is also a popular application among sex workers and travelers looking to meet locals

Tinder introduced paid subscription features such as Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold and Tinder Platinum. These subscriptions allow users additional features such as unlimited likes, location changing, and seeing which profiles have liked them.

Premium features are often used by travelers who want to change their location to a different city before arriving.

Users

Tinder is used worldwide and is available in dozens of languages. The platform has hundreds of millions of users globally and remains one of the most widely used dating apps.

The minimum age requirement for using Tinder is 18.

Because of its large user base and location-based matching system, Tinder has become one of the most common ways for travelers to meet locals in many countries.

Sex Workers and Tinder

Dating and Hookup Apps such as Tinder are sometimes used by independent sex workers, escorts and freelancers who prefer to operate outside traditional escort directories or agencies.

This practice is particularly reported in some parts of Asia and South America, where users may initially connect through Tinder and then continue the conversation through other messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Kik or Snapchat.

Although Tinder's terms of service prohibit prostitution or escort advertising on the platform, some individuals may attempt to use the app to arrange paid companionship.

In cities popular with Sex tourism, travelers sometimes report encountering profiles that appear to be independent escorts or freelancers.

Tinder Scams and Risks

Because Tinder allows fast anonymous connections with nearby users, it is also sometimes used by scammers targeting tourists and travelers.

Some common scams reported by travelers include:

  • fake profiles pretending to be escorts or freelancers asking for deposits before meeting
  • robbery setups where victims are invited to private apartments or hotels
  • blackmail attempts after exchanging explicit photos
  • romance scams asking for financial help

These types of schemes are often described under:

Travelers using dating apps in unfamiliar cities should exercise caution when meeting strangers and avoid sending deposits or verification payments before meeting in person.
