Sukhumvit
Sukhumvit is Bangkok's most famous nightlife district and the center of the city's adult entertainment scene. Stretching for many kilometers through central Bangkok, Sukhumvit is home to the city's largest concentration of bars, clubs, red-light districts, escort agencies, massage parlors, hotels and shopping malls. Every year millions of tourists stay in the Sukhumvit area because it offers easy access to the BTS Skytrain, nightlife, restaurants and some of Bangkok's most famous adult entertainment venues.
The busiest nightlife can be found around Nana BTS Station and Asok BTS Station. This area includes Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy, Sukhumvit Soi 11 and Soi 7/1 Sukhumvit Road, all within walking distance of each other. While each area has its own atmosphere, together they form Bangkok's largest nightlife district.
Unlike Patpong, where much of the nightlife is concentrated into only a few streets, Sukhumvit stretches for several kilometers. It combines ordinary bars, rooftop lounges, Go-go Bars, beer bars, massage parlors, freelancers, luxury hotels and shopping centers, making it one of the busiest entertainment districts in Southeast Asia.
Main Nightlife Areas
The Sukhumvit nightlife district is generally divided into several well-known areas:
- Nana Plaza - Bangkok's largest concentration of Go-go Bars, beer bars and ladyboy bars.
- Soi Cowboy - Compact red-light district famous for neon lights and dozens of go-go bars.
- Sukhumvit Soi 11 - Bangkok's best known nightclub street, popular with tourists, expats and freelancers.
- Soi 7/1 Sukhumvit Road - Beer bars, freelancers and one of Bangkok's longest-running nightlife streets.
- Thong Lor - Upscale bars, clubs and restaurants.
- Ekkamai - Popular with younger locals and expats.
- Asok - Rooftop bars, hotels, shopping malls and nightlife.
History
Sukhumvit Road was constructed during the 1930s and later expanded into one of Thailand's longest highways. The nightlife district developed gradually from the 1960s onwards as foreign businessmen, diplomats, airline crews and later American servicemen during the Vietnam War increased demand for hotels, bars and entertainment.
The opening of hotels such as the Ambassador Hotel helped transform lower Sukhumvit into an international tourist district. During the 1970s and 1980s, Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy became internationally known red-light districts, while Sukhumvit Soi 11 later developed into Bangkok's best known nightclub street.
Today Sukhumvit continues to evolve, with new rooftop bars, luxury hotels, restaurants and clubs opening alongside long-established nightlife venues.
