Papasan
Papasan is a term commonly used in Asian nightlife, red-light districts, hostess bars, karaoke lounges and entertainment venues. A papasan is usually the senior male manager who supervises bar girls, hostesses, dancers and other staff while making sure customers are looked after.
In many bars a papasan will greet customers, recommend girls, arrange seating, organize drink orders, negotiate prices, explain house rules and help resolve disputes. In some venues he acts as the link between customers, management and the girls working inside the establishment.
The female equivalent of a papasan is usually called a Mamasan. In many parts of Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Japan and other nightlife destinations, customers often deal directly with either the papasan or mamasan when choosing girls or arranging services.
Depending on the context, Papasan can have different meanings:
Nightlife and Bar Culture
In nightlife, a papasan is a male floor manager, host or supervisor responsible for the day-to-day operation of beer bars, hostess clubs, KTV´s, go-go bars and other adult entertainment businesses. A good papasan knows the girls, understands the customers and can often help newcomers navigate the venue.
Origin of the Word
The word is generally believed to come from the English word "papa" combined with the Japanese honorific suffix "-san", which is used as a respectful form of address. Over time the term became widely used throughout Asian nightlife and entertainment districts.
