Safeword
A safeword in BDSM is a code word, set of code words, or other signal that a person uses to express their emotional or physical state, usually when they are approaching or crossing a moral, emotional, or physical boundary. While some safewords can express a willingness to carry on, albeit with less intensity, others are used to completely end the scene.
A safeword is a signal that is mutually agreed upon and immediately halts or pauses the action during sex, particularly in BDSM or rough play, where the terms "no," "stop," or "ow" may have a different meaning in explicitly agreed roleplay.

Why Safewords Exist
When one is tied up, spanked, or pushed beyond their comfort zone, the words "no" and "stop" may become integrated into an agreed performance; one may utter "stop!" while simultaneously desiring to continue. This ambiguity is resolved by employing a safeword. Everything comes to a standstill when it is called; there is no debate.
Without that explicit agreement, "no" and "stop" mean stop. If there is any doubt, pause and check.
The Traffic Light System
- Green — "I am comfortable; continue."
- Yellow — "Relax, reduce your pace, there is an issue." Useful for adjusting mid-scene; pause if clarification is needed.
- Red — "Immediately, cease."
Numerous couples exclusively employ red. Some individuals prefer the graded system, as it allows them to adjust without completely disrupting the mood.
Selecting a Safeword
Select a term that is unlikely to make an appearance in dirty conversation. "Yes," "more," and "please" are poor safewords because they can easily be confused with ordinary dirty talk. "Red" and "mercy" are options.
The stoplight colors themselves serve as a safeword set.
When speech is unattainable, a nonverbal signal may be employed, such as tapping the mattress three times, dropping a held object (e.g., keys, a ball), snapping fingers, or squeezing a hand. Before using a gag, establish and test a signal the person can actually make and the partner can detect.
Ground Rules
- Stop immediately. The color red signifies a halt, not "persuade me to continue."
- It is not a verdict. It does not necessarily imply that the other individual made a mistake when someone calls it.
- Both partners can use it. This includes the top/dom.
- Check afterward. After the event, conduct a brief assessment: "what was successful, what was unsuccessful."
- Agree beforehand. Agree on the safeword before the scene, out loud, every time. Do not assume that your partner remembers the safeword from the previous month.
Common Safeword Mistakes
- Employing a term that you will forget in the middle of the scene. "Extemporaneous" is inferior to "pineapple."
- Assuming that "no" signifies "stop" when it is an agreed component of the game, or assuming that it does not when it is. Clarify this beforehand.
- Forgetting that a bottom who is sensory-overloaded or subspacey may become silent and cease safewording independently. Periodically, the top should verify their status. Silence does not mean consent.
