Lan Kwai Fong

Lan Kwai Fong is one of the most famous bar streets in the world and the undisputed nightlife capital of Hong Kong. While many cities have a nightlife district, Lan Kwai Fong has become an actual brand. Ask almost any expat, banker, airline crew member or long-term visitor about nightlife in Hong Kong and this is usually the first place mentioned.

Here are some things you should know about Lan Kwai Fong:

  • Lan Kwai Fong is built almost entirely around drinking. The district is packed with bars, pubs, rooftop lounges, cocktail venues, sports bars and clubs stacked on top of each other.
  • Getting laid is definitely possible. Lan Kwai Fong has always had a reputation for office workers, expats and tourists looking for after-work drinks that sometimes turn into something else.
  • Most hookups come from normal nightlife rather than organized adult entertainment. People meet in bars, rooftop venues and clubs rather than through visible street prostitution.
  • Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights can feel like one giant street party. People bounce between bars, clubs and convenience stores until the early hours.
  • The crowd is noticeably wealthier than in places such as Khaosan Road, Pub Street or Magaluf. Expect finance workers, expats, business travelers, airline crews, tourists and wealthy locals.
  • Escorts operate throughout Hong Kong and many regulars will tell you that nearby Wan Chai has traditionally had a more visible adult scene than Lan Kwai Fong.
  • Drink prices are among the highest in Asia. This is not Thailand, Cambodia or the Philippines. Visitors regularly complain about spending more on one night out in Lan Kwai Fong than an entire weekend elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
  • Expect beer prices around HK$70-120 in many venues. Cocktails often go HK$100-180 or more. Club entry, bottle service and rooftop venues can push the bill much higher.
  • One local joke is that the cheapest bar in Lan Kwai Fong is actually the 7-Eleven. Plenty of regulars grab a HK$15-25 convenience-store beer before heading into the bars.
  • Budget drinkers often escape to nearby areas or happy-hour spots where pints can occasionally be found for HK$40-60, but nobody comes to Lan Kwai Fong expecting cheap nights.
  • Hotels surround the district, from luxury international chains to smaller business hotels. Staying nearby saves money on late-night taxis and makes bar hopping much easier.
  • During Halloween and New Year's Eve the district becomes one of the busiest nightlife zones in Asia and attracts enormous crowds.

Adult Entertainment

Lan Kwai Fong is not a traditional red-light district, but adult entertainment exists around the edges of the nightlife scene.

One of the more unusual businesses in the area is Pink Pussy Cat, an adult store located directly inside Lan Kwai Fong itself. The shop sells adult toys, lingerie and intimate accessories and has become a minor curiosity for visitors exploring the district.

  • Pink Pussy Cat
M/F, 3 Lan Kwai Fong, Central, Hong Kong.
Adult toys, lingerie, intimate accessories and novelty products.
Usually open daily with extended late-night hours on weekends.

While visible prostitution is limited compared with places such as Bangkok, Pattaya or Hamburg, escorts, freelancers and paid companionship services certainly exist in Hong Kong. Most activity takes place discreetly through websites, agencies, nightlife contacts and private arrangements rather than openly on the street.

Some old Hong Kong nightlife veterans joke that Lan Kwai Fong is where people go to meet bankers, airline crew and expats, while Wan Chai is where people go when they are specifically looking for paid company.

Scams and Problems

Travel Warning WARNING: The biggest scam in Lan Kwai Fong is often the bill itself. A few cocktails, nightclub entry and late-night food can easily turn into several hundred Hong Kong dollars before you realize it.
Travel Warning WARNING: Some hostesses, promoters and street marketers may try directing tourists into specific venues. If somebody seems unusually interested in where you drink, keep walking.
Travel Warning WARNING: Pickpocketing is uncommon compared with many major nightlife districts, but crowded weekends still create opportunities for thieves targeting drunk tourists.
Travel Warning WARNING: Visitors looking for escorts should read Escort and Sex Scams. Hong Kong is generally safer than many sex tourism destinations, but fake photos, bait-and-switch situations and inflated pricing still happen.
Travel Warning WARNING: If nightlife leads somewhere more private, remember that STD risks do not disappear simply because Hong Kong is wealthy and modern.

Is Lan Kwai Fong Worth Visiting?

Yes! For prostitution, there are far stronger destinations elsewhere in Asia. For pure nightlife, gettin drunk, casual sex, people watching and drinking until sunrise, Lan Kwai Fong remains one of the world's classic bar street destinations and fully deserves its place on the Top 20 Bar Streets in the World list.
