Ping pong show

A ping pong show (Thai: โชว์ปิงปอง) is a type of live adult entertainment performed in some strip clubs and sex show venues. It is a form of stage show where women use their pelvic muscles to keep, eject or manipulate various objects from the vagina. Ping pong balls are the best known objects used, giving the show its name.

Ping pong shows have been popular with foreign tourists in Southeast Asia, especially in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, for several decades. They are closely associated with sex tourism in Thailand and have also raised human rights concerns regarding some performers.

History

Ping pong shows first became well known during the 1970s and 1980s as Thailand's tourism industry expanded. Many of the early shows were performed in Patpong, which quickly became Bangkok's best known red-light district. Since then similar performances have appeared in other tourist destinations including Pattaya and Phuket.

Although the shows remain famous around the world, the number of venues has gradually declined and many performances today exist mainly because tourists continue asking to see them.

What Happens During a Ping Pong Show?

The famous ping pong balls are only one part of the performance. Depending on the venue, performers may also use balloons, candles, razor blades, ribbons, darts, bananas, bottles, flowers and many other objects.

Some clubs also feature live sex, lesbian shows, masturbation, body painting, bath shows and other adult performances during the same evening. Every venue has its own program.

Where Can You See Ping Pong Shows?

The largest number of ping pong shows can still be found around Patpong in Bangkok. Similar shows are also available in parts of Pattaya and occasionally in Phuket.

Street touts often approach tourists claiming the shows are "free". In reality the show may be free while drinks are heavily overpriced.

Also in Cambodia you can find Ping Pong Shows and in Europe at Amsterdam´s red light district, certain bars such as Casa Rosso have had such a shows.

Prices

Most venues charge either an entrance fee or require customers to buy drinks.

Typical prices:

  • Entrance: Free to 500 THB
  • Beer: 150-300 THB
  • Soft drinks: 100-250 THB

Always ask about drink prices, cover charges and any compulsory fees before entering.

Common Scams

Ping pong shows are among the biggest tourist scams in Thailand.

The most common scam involves touts promising a free show or cheap drinks. After entering, customers are presented with bills of several thousand baht for drinks, "show fees" or service charges.

Never follow strangers offering free ping pong shows on the street. If you decide to visit one, choose an established venue and agree on all prices before ordering anything.

Is It Worth Seeing?

For many first-time visitors, seeing one ping pong show is simply a curiosity and something to cross off the bucket list. Others find the performances repetitive or disappointing compared with the expectations created by movies and travel stories.
