Pride, or Gay Pride for short, is a series of festivals, parades and community events celebrating LGBTQ+ people, equality and diversity. Pride events are held in hundreds of cities worldwide, usually in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots of 1969, but many cities have their events at other times of the year.

Pride events started life as political demonstrations for equal rights, but have become some of the world’s biggest public festivals. They combine marches, concerts, parties, educational events, film festivals, cultural exhibitions and nightlife today and attract millions of visitors every year.

For many travelers, Pride Week is one of the best moments to experience a city’s LGBTQ+ scene Gay bars, Leather bars, Gay saunas, sex-positive clubs, dance clubs and community venues regularly hold special parties, drag shows, themed nights and social events throughout the week. Popular destinations might sell out months in advance.

Major international Pride celebrations include New York City Pride, Madrid Pride, São Paulo Gay Pride Parade, Amsterdam Pride, London Pride, Berlin Pride, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Toronto Pride, San Francisco Pride and many more.

Pride is generally open to all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, but it is worth noting that feelings about LGBT issues vary widely around the world. In some countries the public is very supportive of events commemorating pride, while in others, they may be difficult or impossible to celebrate in public due to legal restrictions or social attitudes. Always check local laws and customs before travelling.
