Bear (gay culture)
A bear is usually a gay guy or bisexual dude who is larger and hairy. A bear is also often has a rugged and has masculine appearance. The bear community emerged during the 1980s as an alternative to the clean-cut body image popular in mainstream gay culture. Many cities have bear nights, bear bars and annual bear festivals where members of the community meet and socialize. While some bears are int BDSM or other fetishes, many are not. Common terms include cub, otter, wolf and daddy, each describing a different body type or look within the community.
