Erotic dance
Erotic dance is dancing performed mainly as sexual entertainment. It is common in strip clubs, go-go bars, adult shows and private parties and is closely connected with the sex industry.
An erotic dancer may be called a stripper, exotic dancer, go-go dancer or adult dancer depending on the type of show and country.
Types of Erotic Dance
Common forms include:
- Striptease – the dancer gradually removes her clothes.
- Lap dance – a private dance performed for one customer.
- Pole dance – dancing and performing tricks around a pole.
- Table dance – dancing for customers at or near their table.
- Go-go dancing – sexy dancing common in bars and nightclubs.
- Burlesque – a more theatrical form of erotic dancing.
- Private dance – a dance for one customer, often in a separate area or VIP room.
Nudity is common but is not necessary. Depending on local laws and club rules, dancers may be fully nude, topless or remain in underwear.
Erotic Dancers and Prostitution
Erotic dancing is not prostitution. Most dancers are paid for the show, tips and private dances rather than sex.
There is plenty of crossover, however. Some strippers also work as escorts or prostitutes, and in some nightlife areas erotic bars are used by hookers to meet customers. In other clubs selling sex is completely forbidden.
The situation varies enormously between countries. A go-go bar in Thailand, a strip club in the United States and a table-dance club in Europe can operate very differently even though all employ erotic dancers.
Money
Erotic dancers usually make money from tips, lap dances and private dances. Some clubs pay the dancers while others charge them a house fee to work.
VIP and private dances normally cost considerably more than watching the stage show. See the individual city and strip club pages for local prices.
