The street is lined with girlie bars, dive bars and sport bars. However, Ermita is in decline. Since P. Sports bars are mostly for playing pool and meeting other foreigners; they have lovely Filipina waitresses, but the girls are unable to leave the establishment until it closes.

The undisputed center of the district is the legendary LA Café (now known as Midnight Heaven Cafe) at 1429 M.H. Del Pilar St. It is a two-story bar with pool tables, a live band, and a restaurant. It is completely renovated under British ownership. On any given day, there are easily over 100 independent contractors (freelancers) working there. Because they are freelancers, there is no bar fine.

About 70 meters up the road is Dusk Till Dawn Bar. The setup is more fancy and more laid back, with the best live music in the area, but the girls work there as employees and will charge you for lady drinks before "entertaining" you. Another notable spot is Smorgasbord across from Manila Lotus Garden, which serves cheap beer and acts as a pickup joint. Note that famous older venues like G-String, Neon Nights, Halim's Bar, Cotton, and Tickles are permanently closed.

The area has a history of high-profile crime, most notably the 2010 Luneta/Quirino Grandstand hostage crisis at Rizal Park in Ermita, where eight tourists perished on a bus. Today, the main threats to tourists are pickpocketing on dark side streets off Del Pilar and Mabini, phone theft by motorcycle riders, and drink spiking at smaller, less well-known bars.

Repeat customers usually get better service than tourists. It is advisable to pretend that you are in city for a longer period of time. This way you get better service because she wants to see you again to get more money. Some hookers (usually the bar girls that believe they are something better than the street freelancers) promise you everything. Don't lose your head! If you do, this may happen: Suddenly she will ask for endless lady drinks (PHP 150-400 each). She will ask for the bar fine just to leave the club, then when you get to your short-stay hotel, she will charge another PHP 3,000 if she takes off her bra and each other promise will set you back more and more financially without any real benefit. This scam is designed to get you to a point when you will just say, NO and leave with less pesos and no satisfaction at all. Rather give up your initial investment of a lady drink and venture for a new girl at LA Café if you get caught in this trap. The girl has connections to the bar bouncers, so do not try to run out on a bar tab.Usually pay is before service. However it is advisable to pay after if possible or deposit the money on a table visible for the lady so she can take it after the job is done.

The Ermita girlie bars don't come to life before the evening; a good time to visit is after 9 pm. However, you can walk into LA Café on a Wednesday afternoon at around 3 p.m. and find dozens of women already hanging out trying to find clients.

It gets very crowded on the weekends during peak hours (11 p.m. to 2 a.m.); the area is riskier than Makati due to weaker police presence, so you should still be cautious, keep your phone in your pocket, and beware of pickpockets.

If you are lured into a bar by an unsolicited street "guide," expect to shell out heavily for overpriced drinks to cover his commission.

Own beer: PHP 80-160 (happy hour as low as PHP 60)

Freelancers (LA Café/street): PHP 1,500-3,000 short term; PHP 2,000-5,000 overnight.
