Fetish and kink get used for much the same thing in everyday conversation. A fetish often centres on something particular, such as boots, feet or latex. Kink covers more ground, including roleplay, restraint and power dynamics. Plenty of people have interests in more than one category.

For some people, the clothes are the whole attraction. It might be the shine of latex, the smell of leather or the feel of stockings.

Someone wearing a leather jacket or corset is not necessarily making a sexual statement. The same outfit can mean very different things to different people.

Body Parts and Physical Features

Feet get plenty of attention, but they are far from the only focus. Hands, hair, armpits, navels, legs and body hair all have their admirers.

Some interests centre on a particular build or physical feature. Others involve pregnancy or lactation. Finding something attractive does not tell you whether the other person wants that attention.

Power, Control and Restraint

For some people, the attraction is handing over control. For others, it is taking charge. That is where a lot of BDSM interests come in.

Being dominant does not mean doing whatever the hell you want. The limits still count, and an agreement can be withdrawn.

Roleplay and Fantasy

Roleplay gives people room to step outside their usual personality. Some enjoy a costume and a different attitude. Others build an elaborate scene around a character or setting.

  • Transformation fetish - Fantasies about changing form.
  • Size difference fetish - Contrasting sizes, sometimes involving imaginary giants or miniature people.

A fantasy can stay a fantasy. Enjoying an idea does not mean wanting it to happen outside the scene.

Wet and Messy Fetishes

Wet and messy, usually shortened to WAM, centres on substances such as mud, slime or food. Sploshing is a closely related term, particularly associated with messy food.

For some, the texture is the attraction. For others, it is the mess, the appearance or getting dressed up and then ruining the outfit.

Watching and Being Seen

Voyeurism concerns excitement from watching, while Exhibitionism concerns being seen.

At an adult event, the house rules matter. An open door does not automatically mean spectators are welcome. Being allowed to watch does not give anyone permission to touch, take photos or record.

Medical Themes and Higher-Risk Practices

Medical fetish can involve clinical clothing, equipment or examination roleplay. Wearing a white coat does not make someone medically qualified.

Dressing up and using invasive equipment are very different propositions. Practices involving blood, fire or restricted breathing carry serious risks. Breath restriction can cause fatal injury; experience and an agreed signal do not make it safe.

Having a Fetish

An unusual turn-on is not automatically a problem. What matters is consent, whether anyone is being harmed and whether the interest is causing distress or taking over everyday life.

There is no requirement to collect more extreme experiences or prove how kinky you are. Liking one particular thing is enough.
