Hair fetish

Hair fetish, also called trichophilia, is an attraction to human hair. It can involve hair on the head, beards, chest hair, armpit hair or pubic hair. In dating and the sex industry, words such as hairy, natural, unshaved and full bush usually describe body hair or grooming preferences.

Some people have a strong fetish for hair. Others simply prefer an unshaved partner. The two are not necessarily the same.

Hair Fetish Terms

Different words describe different preferences:

  • Hairy - a broad description of visible body hair.
  • Bush or full bush - pubic hair left unshaved, although some people still trim it. Often seen in older porn films.
  • Natural or au naturel - often means unshaved in this context, but the word can have other meanings.
  • 70s bush - slang for a fuller pubic-hair style associated with older adult magazines and films.
  • Hirsute - another word for hairy.
  • Fur - informal slang for body hair, particularly in parts of the gay scene.

These terms are not fixed standards. One person's idea of "hairy" may mean a little chest hair, while another means an almost completely untrimmed body.

Hairy Women and Full Bush

An attraction to women's body hair may involve pubic hair, natural armpits, leg hair or a combination of these. Some people prefer the appearance, some like the texture, and others simply dislike the shaved look.

"Full bush" and "unshaved" describe grooming. They do not tell you a woman's personality, sexual interests or willingness to do anything. A natural appearance does not mean someone is more adventurous, and a shaved appearance says nothing about maturity.

Preferences also cross sexual orientations. Women who date women may prefer natural body hair just as men may, and people within either group have different tastes.

Hairy Men, Bears and Otters

In parts of the gay and bisexual scene, body hair appears in familiar community and body-type labels:

  • Bear - generally a larger, hairy man, often with a beard.
  • Otter - generally a slimmer, hairy man.
  • Wolf - sometimes used for a hairy man with an athletic or muscular build.
  • Cub - often a younger adult member of the bear community.

The meanings vary, and people choose their own labels. A bear is not automatically dominant, a top or interested in a particular sexual activity.

Bear culture is also a social community. It includes friendships, bars, clubs, travel and events, rather than being only a body-hair fetish. Examples include Provincetown Bear Week in the United States and Bears Sitges Week in Spain.

Hair Fetish in Pornography

In pornography, "hairy", "natural", "unshaved" and "full bush" are used as category labels. In gay pornography, descriptions such as "bear", "otter" and "muscle bear" may combine body type with grooming.

These are broad marketing descriptions. They do not necessarily mean that every performer has the same appearance or that body hair is the main subject of the production.

Hairy Escorts and Profile Descriptions

Some escort profiles use "hairy", "natural", "bush" or "unshaved" to describe appearance. Male escort profiles may use terms such as "bear" or "otter".

Photos and descriptions can become outdated when someone changes their grooming. The word "natural" is especially ambiguous because it may describe something other than body hair.

An appearance label does not establish services, boundaries or compatibility. Those are separate matters.

Body Hair and Country Stereotypes

There is no reliable country ranking in the material behind this article showing where people are most likely to leave their body hair unshaved. Grooming varies between individuals, generations and social groups.

Claims that all French women avoid shaving, or that Turkish and Middle Eastern women follow one grooming style, turn stereotypes into rules. Nationality does not tell you whether someone shaves, trims or leaves their hair alone.

Body hair and circumcision are separate characteristics. An uncircumcised man is not necessarily hairy, and a circumcised man is not necessarily shaved.

Why People Like Body Hair

The appeal may involve appearance, texture, personal associations or scent. There is no single explanation that applies to every straight, gay or bisexual person.

Some people associate body hair with a particular style or image of adulthood. That is a personal association, not proof of someone's hormone levels, personality or sexual behaviour.

Scent can be part of attraction, but claims that body hair traps proven human "sex pheromones" and automatically causes arousal go beyond established evidence.
