Gaixample
Gaixample is the name given to the gay section of Barcelona’s Eixample district and one of the largest gayborhoods in Europe. The neighborhood around Carrer de Casanova, Balmes, Carrer Diputació, Villarroel and surrounding streets is full of gay bars, cruising clubs, drag shows, gay saunas and other gay friendly places. Sex shops are also all over the area and sell all type of sex toys, while poppers are illegal now to sell.
The scene is a blend of gay bear type of dudes, twinks, transgender girls and foreign tourists. Nights start late, and many bars don't get busy until very late. Summer, Pride week and circuit-party season draw huge international crowds and it is best to book your accommodation well before that.
The lesbian and queer women scene in Barcelona is more about queer bars, mixed LGBT parties and places like Candy Darling, Priscilla and different queer pop-up nights.
Gaixample is more mainstream and polished than mast gay red-light districts since it has also gay prostitution and sometimes is called as red light area.
Watch out your valuables in the area and do not get too drunk since drink spiking can occur.
