Freetown Christiania

Freetown Christiania is often misunderstood by foreign visitors in Copenhagen. Some guys hear about the old open weed market on Pusher Street and think Christiania must be a red-light district, like a Danish version of Amsterdam with window prostitution. It is not. Christiania has been a hippie and free-town area, weed market, music place, art village and alternative community, but not Copenhagen’s main sex selling district.

The old open cannabis market on Pusher Street is also not what it used to be. In 2024, after years of gang trouble and violence, Christiania locals and police helped tear down the old stalls and even dig up the cobblestones. The idea was simple: get the gangs out and turn Pusher Street into something what politicians want. Hidden dealing may still happen in Christiania like in other areas of Copenhagen, but the old open “green light district” version of Christiania is basically finished.

That is why Christiania should not be mixed up with Istedgade. Christiania was the weed and alternative-culture place. Istedgade in Vesterbro is the old Copenhagen red-light street, especially the station-end area behind Copenhagen Central Station. That is where the old street prostitution, sex shops, strip bars, cheap hotels, drug users and rough nightlife reputation sits.

Christiania also has its own local rules and social code. Violence, hard drugs, weapons and organized criminal shit have never been welcome in the official Christiania self-image, even if the old Pusher Street trade brought plenty of trouble over the years. Organized prostitution is not part of the place. People live there, families live there, and asking around for sex work in Christiania is the wrong move.

Today Christiania is more about culture, old squatter history, weird houses, vegetarian food, music, street art and curious visitors. Istedgade is the name to use for the old Copenhagen red-light side. Christiania is not the sex district. Istedgade is.
