Calle Montera

Calle Montera is one of the most well known bar streets in Spain and for decades was considered the closest thing Madrid had to a traditional red-light district due to the prostitution in the area. The street runs between Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía and has long been associated with nightlife, street prostitutes, tourists, pickpockets and party crowd.

Here are some things you should know about Calle Montera:

  • If Madrid had a Main Street for nightlife, it would probably be Calle Montera.
  • The huge McDonald's on the corner of Montera and Gran Vía has been one of the most famous meeting spots in Madrid for years. Countless nights out begin there.
  • Madrid nightlife starts late. Many bars do not really get going until around midnight and the city often stays active until sunrise.
  • Getting laid is definitely easier than in many Northern European cities. Madrid has a huge social nightlife culture and people actually go out to meet people instead of sitting quietly at tables all night.
  • The area attracts tourists, students, office workers, backpackers, football fans, party tourists and random night owls looking for one more drink before heading home.
  • Calle Montera became famous throughout Spain because of its prostitution scene. Back in the day the street was known for visible street hookers standing around parts of the area, especially late at night.
  • While the prostitution scene is smaller than it used to be, the street still carries that reputation and remains one of the most famous prostitution-related streets in Madrid.
  • Unlike Walking Street, Nana Plaza or Reeperbahn, Montera is not built around adult entertainment. It is first and foremost a nightlife street with a prostitution history.
  • Drinks are usually cheaper than London, Dublin, Zurich or Scandinavia, which helps explain why Madrid remains one of Europe's strongest party cities.
  • Hotels, hostels, guesthouses and tourist apartments are everywhere around the area. Most visitors can walk back to their accommodation after a night out.
  • Nearby La Latina is popular for bar hopping while Chueca is one of the most famous gay nightlife districts in Europe.
Travel Warning WARNING: Pickpockets love distracted foreigners around Sol, Gran Vía and Calle Montera. Keep your phone and wallet secure.
Travel Warning WARNING: If someone aggressively tries to drag you into a club, private venue or random bar, keep walking. Madrid has plenty of legitimate nightlife without needing street hustlers.
