Prostitute
A prostitute is someone who does prostitution, which is the act of giving sexual services in exchange for money or other forms of payment. Prostitutes can work on their own, through escort agencies, in brothels, or in other parts of the sex industry. Both men and women can work as prostitutes, but most sex workers in the world are women.
Prostitution has been a part of almost every culture and civilization throughout history. Ancient texts, religious writings, and early legal systems all mention prostitutes. In many cultures, prostitution grew up along trade routes, in port cities, and in big cities where travelers and merchants wanted sexual services.
There are many different kinds of prostitution today. Some prostitutes work for themselves and advertise their services online, while others work in organized places like strip clubs, brothels, or massage parlors. Street prostitution, which is when people have sex for money on the street, happens in some places.
There are many different words that people use to talk about prostitutes. In some situations, female prostitutes are called call girls, escorts, or working girls. Sometimes, male prostitutes are called gigolos or male escorts. The way people talk about things often shows how people in different cultures and countries feel about them.
Many cities have prostitutes who use the Internet, escort directories, social media, or adult websites that are only for adults to advertise their services. In many parts of the world, online ads have mostly taken the place of older methods like newspaper listings or asking people on the street.
Prostitution is legal in different ways in different countries. In some places, prostitution is legal, but owning a brothel or asking for sex may not be. Some countries have made sex work legal and regulated it, while others have made it illegal for both prostitutes and their clients.
Travelers who come across prostitution in other countries should be aware of the laws and customs there. Scams with fake escorts or ads that aren't true can happen, especially in big tourist areas. Check out Escort and Sex scams and Massage Parlor Scams as well.
Health risks should be taken into account, just like with any other sexual activity. When having sex, it's important to be aware of and protect yourself from STDs.
Types of prostitutes
Prostitutes operate in a variety of environments depending on local culture and the structure of the sex business.
Brothel prostitutes work in organized establishments where multiple sex workers operate under a management structure. See Brothel.
Massage parlor workers may offer sensual or sexual services disguised as massage treatments. See Erotic massage and Asian Massage Parlors.
Street prostitutes typically solicit clients in public areas such as streets, parks or nightlife districts. See also Street prostitution.
Escort prostitutes usually meet clients through escort agencies or independent advertising. These encounters often take place in hotels or private apartments.
History
Prostitution is sometimes described as one of the oldest professions. Archaeological and historical records show that prostitution existed in ancient Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome. Many early cities had designated areas or districts where prostitution was tolerated or regulated.
Throughout history attitudes toward prostitution have shifted repeatedly between tolerance, regulation and criminalization depending on political, religious and social factors.
Modern prostitution
In the modern world prostitution is closely connected with global travel, migration and urban nightlife. Large metropolitan areas often develop informal prostitution scenes connected to bars, clubs, hotels and entertainment districts.
The growth of the Internet has significantly changed how prostitutes find clients. Online platforms allow sex workers to advertise services, screen customers and communicate privately before meetings.
