Heera Mandi
Heera Mandi or Hira Mandi, also spelled Heeramandi, is the old historic red-light district and bazaar of Lahore, Pakistan. The name means Diamond Market in Urdu/Punjabi, and the area is also known as Shahi Mohalla or the Royal Neighbourhood. It sits around Taxali Gate on the northwest side of the Walled City, near Badshahi Masjid, Lahore Fort and Hazuri Bagh. See Lahore for the full city guide. Heera Mandi was once the heart of Lahore’s tawaif culture. The women here were not just cheap street girls. They were courtesans, dancers, singers and performers tied to classical music, mujra, kothas and old Mughal court culture. Later, under British rule and modern Lahore, the area became more bluntly known as a red-light district.
The name Heera Mandi is often explained by locals as “diamond market” because of the beauty of the women, but another common explanation is that it was named after Heera Singh, a minister under Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Either way, the name stuck hard, and today it is one of the most famous red-light names in South Asia.
During the day, Heera Mandi can look like any other old Lahore bazaar: food, old buildings, shops, khussa footwear, musical instruments and Walled City traffic. The old brothel houses and kothas are mostly gone, hidden or changed into other businesses. The area is now better known to many visitors as a heritage and food-street area, especially after the Netflix series Heeramandi made the name famous again.
Today Heera Mandi is not the open sex bazaar foreigners imagine when they search for Lahore red light district or Heera Mandi prostitutes. Some paid sex may still exist quietly through old networks, private homes, visiting escorts and discreet contacts, but the visible red-light district has faded hard. Most Lahore sex work today is private, hidden, online, hotel-based or handled through discreet Escort arrangements.
That is the main thing to understand. Heera Mandi still belongs on any list of red-light districts in Pakistan because the name is historic, famous and tied deeply to Lahore’s prostitution history. But it should be described as faded, mostly historical and heavily watched, not as a working open sex market.
Safety
Heera Mandi is inside old Lahore, and the area is more conservative and watched than the old stories suggest. Pakistan is strict, prostitution is illegal, and the social risk is high.
