Villa Tinto Window Prostitution Complex
Villa Tinto is a purpose-built "super-brothel" and window prostitution complex in the Schipperskwartier (literally "sailors’ quarter"), Antwerp’s red-light district in Belgium. It is Belgium’s biggest, most high-tech brothel in its biggest red-light district, built to show how regulated, modern sex work can operate.
Location, Rooms and Design
Location: Verversrui and Schippersstraat, in the city’s official tolerance zone. Prostitution is only allowed in the area between Verversrui, Vingerlingstraat and Schippersstraat in Antwerp.
Opened: 2005. Built by Belgian businessman Franky De Coninck.
Size: A converted former industrial building with a complex of 51 rooms/windows.
Design: Redesigned by Belgian architect Arne Quinze and Flemish interior designers, finished to a boutique-hotel standard – often described as looking more like a "W hotel" than a traditional brothel.
Villa Tinto Prices
An August 2023 customer report put one Villa Tinto worker's price at €50 for 15 minutes or €100 for 30 minutes. She also offered an hour, but the report did not give an hourly price.
The same customer reported that another worker wanted €50 extra for kissing. Paying for more time does not automatically include every extra, so ask what the price covers before handing over the cash.
These are individual prices reported in 2023, not a current Villa Tinto price list. See global prostitution prices.
Security and Working Conditions
Villa Tinto introduced several security features:
EU-passport rule: Only women with EU passports can get jobs there.
Biometric keypads on each room so a window can’t be quietly sublet to an unauthorized worker.
Panic buttons in all rooms if a client becomes violent.
The police station is directly across from the entrance, and there is a clinic around the corner that provides free, anonymous testing and treatment for STIs.
Workers can come and go as they please. They rent by shift and are not owned by a boss.
The manager for years had been George Vos, a former transvestite prostitute who became an entrepreneur.
Customers and Reputation
Villa Tinto is promoted as a tourist-friendly, "gentrified" brothel, with a mixed crowd said to range from everyday working guys to lawyers and doctors. It has served as a political showpiece: the mayor of Antwerp at the time, Patrick Janssens, hailed it as proof that concentrating prostitution in three streets enabled the city to apply stringent standards. The city spent more than €10 million to regenerate the entire Schipperskwartier.
Prostitution in Schipperskwartier
Prostitution is legal in Belgium, and Villa Tinto is situated in Antwerp’s strictly regulated zone of tolerance – around 280 windows and around 400 workers in the district in 2016, most of whom were from Bulgaria, Romania and Nigeria. Delegations from Brussels, Charleroi and Liège came to study the setup, and there were plans to export the concept, including a proposed Villa Tinto in Barcelona.
It has its critics, too. Even the slickest "elite" brothels are a cover for the larger exploitation and violence of the trade, contend organizations like the European Women's Lobby.
Villa Tinto is a designer, high-tech brothel which became well known for regulated sex work in Belgium. A police station in the historic sailors' quarter of Antwerp is surrounded by neon-lit red-light windows for sex workers.
The station in the Villa Tinto complex is part of the effort to make sex work safer in Belgium, which has some of Europe's most liberal laws – despite widespread abuse and exploitation.
Since December, Belgian sex workers have had access to the same legal protections and labor rights as any other profession, such as paid leave. They welcome the changes.
Sex Workers at Villa Tinto
On April 1, a BDSM-trained sex worker held a whip in a room at Villa Tinto, Antwerp's legal sex work center.
"I'm not a victim; I chose to work here and I enjoy what I do," said Kiana, 32, as she showed off her workspace, which included a double bed bathed in a dim red light, various chains, and other sado-masochistic accessories.
Kiana, who did not want to give her last name, left Romania at the age of 18 and worked in Germany before moving to Belgium. She rents one of the 51 display windows in Villa Tinto and works five days a week.
"My mother understands what I am doing. For the rest of my family, I do nails and tattoos," she explained.
The law has given "Mel," a sex worker and TikTok star who answers questions about her work, the chance to speak openly about her job.
"I was just tired of lying about what I do for a living and claiming to be a hairdresser or masseuse," she explained.
In 2022, Belgium decided to reform its sex work laws, including relaxing rules on advertising prostitution for people over the age of 18.
"We, as sex workers, were seen by the state as a real job, and people's perspectives changed" as a result of the law, said Meliciousss, an Antwerp resident.
Sex Work Laws in Belgium
Today, the law allows an adult to advertise their own "sexual services" in a designated location, such as behind a window.
Third parties, such as bankers, web designers, and property owners, are no longer subject to prosecution for their involvement in the sex work industry.
The law, described as "historic" by Belgium's Human Rights League, pits Belgium against countries that want to legalize sex work, such as Germany and the Netherlands, as well as countries that do not, such as France and Sweden.
According to Utsopi, Belgium has between 9,000 and 26,000 sex workers, with women accounting for 90 percent of the total. There are no official figures.
The dangers persist. Seven Chinese suspects were arrested.
