Sumata
Sumata (素股), also called Japanese thigh sex, is a non-penetrative sex service found in some Japanese massage parlors, fashion health clubs and deriheru outcall services. During sumata, a partner rubs the penis between the thighs or against the outside of the vulva without penetration. In some adult-service listings, however, the word is also used more loosely, so customers should ask what a particular shop means.

What Is Sumata?
Sumata (素股) literally means "bare thigh." The woman may straddle or kneel over the man and rub her lubricated thighs or vulva against his penis. The shaft stays outside the vagina, with friction coming from the thighs or the outside of the vulva.
Some variations use the thighs alone; others involve grinding against the vulva from different angles. The movement can also stimulate the woman's clitoris. Customers who like sumata often describe it as slower and more teasing than penetration.
Sumata and Japanese Sex-Work Law
Sumata is associated with Japan's commercial sex laws. The 1956 Anti-Prostitution Law defined prostitution around paid vaginal intercourse. Other services, including handjobs, blowjobs and sumata, could be offered by licensed fūzoku (風俗) businesses without being classed as prostitution under that definition.
That distinction is why sumata became a familiar service in Japan's "health" businesses: it can feel like sex, but the penis does not enter the vagina.
"Full service" (本番, honban) means actual penetration and may be offered as an extra rather than part of the standard booking. The usual "health" service is the basic package; penetration is an additional service. Condom use and other terms vary by shop and worker.
Where Sumata Is Offered
Sumata is associated with deriheru (delivery health) and fashion health parlors. It is also offered in some soaplands, Japanese bathhouse-style establishments where penetration may be part of the service.
Some shops list sumata as a named course or advertise workers who specialize in it. The service and its price depend on the establishment.
Sumata in Outcall Health Ads
In outcall health listings, "sumata" may be used more broadly than the non-penetrative thigh service. Some ads use it to refer to the crotch or genital area, so the exact meaning can vary.
Terms used in ads include:
- Sumata chū (すまた中) - literally "inside the crotch"; some listings use it to indicate vaginal sex.
- Sumata shutsu (すまた出) - literally "outside the crotch"; it may refer to oral sex on the vulva or other external genital stimulation.
- Sumata yori - a softer phrase sometimes used for massage that includes attention to the genital area.
The wording can work as a euphemism in advertising. A listing may include the service in its base price or charge extra. Condom policies vary, and some workers may offer "naked sumata" only by prior agreement. Ask what the ad means and what the price covers before booking.
