Online dating

Online dating is also used by some escorts, prostitutes and other sex workers to meet potential customers, even though ordinary dating sites and apps are not escort directories.

Some working girls create normal-looking dating profiles and only mention money or paid meetings after a conversation has started.

Others use dating apps mainly to find dates and casual sex, while occasionally accepting paid arrangements or gifts.

The amount of prostitution found on dating apps varies enormously between countries, cities and individual apps.

In major nightlife and sex tourism destinations, travelers may encounter profiles belonging to independent escorts, freelancers, bargirls or massage girls.

After making contact through a dating app, prostitutes may move the conversation to WhatsApp, LINE, Zalo, WeChat or Telegram.

In Thailand, for example, conversations commonly move to LINE, while Zalo is much more important among local users in Vietnam and WeChat in China.

Grindr and other gay dating apps can similarly be used by some male escorts and transgender sex workers, although most people using these apps are not selling sex.

Dating apps can also contain fake escort profiles, romance scams and people asking for advance payments, so a dating profile should not automatically be treated as genuine.

Online dating therefore overlaps with prostitution in some places, but dedicated sites such as Massage Republic, EuroGirlsEscort and other escort directories are specifically designed around escort advertising.
