Where Is Manchester Gay Village?
Canal Street is the main strip. The surrounding streets make up the wider Village, so there is more to it than the bars facing the water.
Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Oxford Road are the nearest railway stations. Piccadilly is a short walk away. Once here, the bars and clubs are close enough to walk between.
Gay Bars and Clubs
The Village has gay pubs, bars, drag queen shows and clubs within walking distance of each other. Canal Street is the main strip.
- Via, 28-30 Canal Street - Bar, food and live cabaret. Open since 1995.
- New York New York, Bloom Street - Long-running gay bar with dancing and entertainment.
- Cruz 101, 101 Princess Street - Gay nightclub open since 1992, with the main club upstairs and Sub 101 downstairs.
Opening Hours
Hours below were checked in September 2026, but special events can change the usual times.
- Via - Noon-2am Sunday-Thursday; noon-3am Friday and Saturday.
- Cruz 101 - Tuesday and Thursday nights midnight-6am; Friday and Saturday 11pm-8am; Sunday night midnight-7am. Monday and Wednesday closed.
Cruz's midnight opening means the late-night session following the named evening. Bring photo ID; the club states that it is required for entry.
Prices and Entry
Check the actual night's admission price before setting off. A special event can have different tickets and door arrangements.
Cruz 101 advertised drinks from £3.20 for its app users when checked in September 2026. That is an app offer, not a general price for drinks around the Village. Its listed cloakroom charge was £2 per item on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Sackville Gardens
Sackville Gardens is beside the canal. The Alan Turing memorial is here, with a bronze statue of him sitting on a bench. It is an easy stop while walking around the Village during the day.
History
The gay scene developed around Canal Street and the Rochdale Canal during years when gay men faced police harassment. The British television series Queer as Folk later brought the area to a much wider audience.
The Village remains a residential neighbourhood as well as a nightlife area. Manchester City Council published a Gay Village Action Plan in 2024 covering its preservation and improvement.
Planning a Night Out
For cabaret, check the performer and starting time. For clubbing, check the night's music and opening hours. A bar opening at noon and a club opening at midnight need different plans.
Check the last train before drinking. A club staying open until morning does not mean public transport runs all night.
