Labia
Labia are the folds of skin around the openings of the vagina and urethra, often called the pussy lips. They are part of the external genitals, or vulva. The vagina itself is the canal inside the body.
Inner and Outer Lips
- Labia majora - The outer lips. They usually grow pubic hair.
- Labia minora - The inner lips. They have no pubic hair and meet towards the top around the clitoris.
Despite the names, the inner lips can stick out beyond the outer ones. One side is sometimes longer than the other and very rarely exactly same size.
Appearance
Labia vary in size, shape and colour. Small, large, tucked-in, protruding and uneven labia can all be normal. Their appearance does not tell you how much someone had sex.
Sex
The labia are sensitive and can swell during sexual arousal. Sensitivity varies, so ask what feels comfortable rather than assuming everyone likes the same touch. Persistent pain, itching, sores or a new lump should be checked by a healthcare professional.
