Jineterismo
Jineterismo is a term used in Cuba to describe street-level hustling and informal prostitution connected to tourism. The people involved are commonly called jineteras (women) or jineteros (men).
The word comes from the Spanish "jinete" (horse rider), and in Cuban slang it refers to someone who "rides" or works tourists for money, gifts or opportunities. It doesn’t only mean sex work. It can include companionship, drinking, guiding, selling goods or just hanging around tourists looking for something to gain.
In places like Havana and Varadero, jineterismo is part of the everyday tourist scene. You’ll see it around hotels, bars, nightclubs and streets where foreigners hang out. Some interactions are clearly about sex, others are more indirect, like drinks, gifts or short-term relationships that may turn into something more.
Many jineteras approach foreign men directly, often starting with casual conversation before moving toward offers of company, going out, or sex. Compared to more structured escort services, it’s informal, flexible and usually cheaper.
How it works
Most jineterismo is based on quick, informal arrangements. There is no fixed pricing and everything depends on the situation, location and the people involved. Some tourists are looking for a short-term girlfriend experience, others just for sex.
It’s also common for jineteros to offer other things at the same time, such as cigars, taxi rides, restaurants or contacts. That’s why it often overlaps with general tourist hustling and small-scale scams.
Legal situation
Prostitution in Cuba exists in a legal grey area. While not officially legal, enforcement is inconsistent. Authorities mainly focus on visible street activity and interactions with tourists.
Police presence in tourist areas means both locals and visitors usually keep things discreet. Hotels may also restrict bringing guests inside, which is why many arrangements happen in private houses.
Stay Safe
Jineterismo is usually low-level and opportunistic, but problems can happen. Common issues include overcharging, pressure for money or gifts, and situations where more people get involved than expected.
Be careful when approached by strangers near hotels or nightlife areas. As with any street prostitution or informal encounter, use common sense, keep control of your belongings and avoid situations that feel off.
