Bumsters

Bumsters are a well-known feature of womens sex tourism and romance tourism in Gambia, especially around beach resorts, hotel zones, and tourist promenades.

The term is local slang and refers mainly to young men who hang around tourists looking for money, gifts, meals, visas, or romantic/sexual relationships. In other regions they’d be called beach boys, sanky-pankys, or romance hustlers — but in Gambia, they are simply known as bumsters.

They are not classic male escorts and usually don’t charge directly for sex. What they sell is access, attention, and a version of the Boyfriend Experience.

What Bumsters Do

  • Who they are? Mostly young local men who work in tourist areas and are often unemployed or underemployed. They spend their days on beaches, outside of hotels, near bars, or following tour groups. Some people act as guides, "helpers," fixers, or just friendly locals who have some free time.
  • How contact starts? Always casual. A hello. A joke. Help with the bags. Offering to show "the real Gambia." They can sometimes attach themselves in just a few minutes. It can take a few days. Once they are attached, they stay close.
  • Romance first, money later? They don't often ask for money up front. Instead, it's food, drinks, phone credit, club entry, clothes, small "loans," or help with rent. If sex happens, it's seen as part of a relationship, not a deal.
  • Who they target? Mostly older European women on winter vacations. Solo travelers, people who come back, and women who stay for more than a week are the main targets.

Regional Comparisons

A local term specific to Gambian beach culture. Highly visible and openly discussed by tourists and locals alike.

More nightclub- and resort-based, often working officially in tourism jobs.

  • JamaicaRent-a-Rastas / Rastitutes

Historically similar patterns tied to reggae culture and beach tourism, though more controlled today.

Veteran travelers often describe bumsterism as part of a global pattern found anywhere tourism money meets local poverty.

Money Reality

Nothing is priced, but forum regulars report typical costs:

  • Daily food & drinks: $30–60
  • Nights out & clubs: $40–100
  • Clothes, shoes, phone credit: $50–200
  • “Family emergencies”: unlimited potential

Once emotional attachment kicks in, spending usually increases.

Veteran Warnings

  • If he says you’re his “wife” after two days — script
  • If every walk turns into meeting his friends — wallet check
  • If he needs money to “start a business” — it won’t start
  • If condoms disappear once feelings appear — walk away
  • If you send money after leaving — assume it’s gone

Old forum advice: Enjoy the company. Control the cash.

Why It’s Controversial

  • A big difference in the economy* Both sides are using emotional manipulation
  • Risks of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Pressure from visas and immigration
  • Lines between love and prostitution are getting fuzzy.

Some people think bumsters are dangerous. Some people think they are survivors. Most people who live there see it as part of the tourism economy.
