Sex Scene and Prostitution
Officially, prostitution is illegal in mainland China. The government of China has vacillated, however, in its legal treatment of prostitutes themselves, treating them sometimes as criminals and sometimes as behaving with misconduct.
Sex tourism is a big business in China. Almost every five-star hotel has a group of women hanging around that offer a variety of services for male travelers. Many hotels, including state-owned ones, employ the prostitutes themselves. It's not difficult to find sex in China.
Red Light Districts
A red-light district is a part of an urban area where there is a concentration of prostitution and sex-oriented businesses, such as sex shops, strip clubs, adult theaters, etc. The term originates from the red lights that were used as signs of brothels. There are areas in many big cities around the world which have acquired an international reputation as red-light districts. Some red-light districts have acquired a touristic interest beyond sex tourism, and can be perceived as places of artistic, historic or cultural interest, whether or not they still serve the sex trade.

Prostitutes and Sex Workers
Prostitution is illegal but practiced openly. Prostitutes work out of five-star hotels, karaokes, entertainment centers, dance halls, boxing clubs, beauty parlors, hairdressers, barbershops, saunas, bathhouses, massage parlors, nightclubs and on the streets.
By one count there are around 1 million full-time prostitutes in China and perhaps 8 to 10 million more that sometimes accept money and gifts for sex.
Sex with street walkers in China can sometimes be had for under 100RMB, sometimes as low as 50RMB a shot. Prices vary of course depending of the looks of the girl and your negotiating skills. Street prostitution is not very visible because many of the prostitutes are working in barbershops and hair salons. Chinese streetwalkers don't wear high heels and mini-skirts like the western street prostitutes.
Strip Clubs & Lap Dance
There are no legal strip clubs in China but that doesn't mean they don't exist. There should be lots of them "underground". Taxi drivers often know right places. Chinese girls are extremely traditional about showing off their bodies.
Karaoke Bars (KTVs)
Karaoke bars in China are often full of women who’ll sit and chat to you for a fee. Some of them will also accompany you to bed. If the karaoke bar is in a hotel then you’ll be expected to retire to one of the hotel’s rooms, if not then you take her back to your hotel or apartment.
There are two kinds of KTVs you can find in China:
- Some only provide rooms with music, screen and so on.
- Another style are the KTVs, where you also "book" KTV Girls for entertainment while you are "singing" in the room.
Brothels / Barbershops
Brothels in China are often disguised as hair salons or barbershops (BBS). They are common sights in Chinese cities and towns of all sizes and operate for the most part without any interference. When you pass by, you will see some attractive girls (most time in sexy dresses) sitting around, but never anyone will be busy with haircut. Traditional they have also pink light in the shop, but now a lot of them changed to normal light to hide their kind of service a little bit. Many of these shops are real BBS during the day and only become special at night.
What will happen in a Chinese Barbershop?
When you go inside, they first will ask you to select a girl. Most time, there will be a "Mamasan" boss who will introduce you to the girl. You should also negotiate the price now, otherwise they will try to cheat you later. (If you don't speak Chinese, the barbershop experience will not be easy for you, because you will not find a mamasan or a girl can speak english there, because most of the girls are from countryside and not so well educated). After you have selected your girl, they will guide you to a separate room, normally equipped with a massage table. When you are alone with you, she will start massage you a little bit (with definitely no skills), then very fast she will start to massage you at a special area, most barbershops will also offer BJ and full service.
What will be the rate in a Barbershop?
Most time, they will ask around RMB 100,- up to RMB 300,- for a full service session (normally not more than 10 to 15 minutes). Sometimes they don't have full service available, so make your deal clear before starting any action. If you want to spend more time, they will loose patience very fast. Barbershop Business is a "fast-time-fun".
- They will push you a lot to take a second or third girl, so if you cannot tell them very clear that you don't want, they will first disturb you every 2 minutes. They don't want you to leave without payment and they will understand very fast that it is better to let you enjoy the service now.
- They will try to ask for extra money for extra services all the time, so also make very clear, what you are willing to pay for the service you expect. Don't accept any negotiation anymore.
- You should know, these places are not high level shops, that means don't expect a clean well decorated shop. A typical Chinese Barbershop has bad smell and dirty floors. Also the massage table will be dirty and they not even change the towel or cover for every customer, so also the hygienic conditions don't match western standards. If you like to have more clean entertainment, you have to spend much more, but you will get longer service under better hygienic conditions in a high class Chinese saunas.
Erotic Massage Parlors
All over in China you will find small massage parlor shops. Normally there is at least a happy ending with HJ in normal rate included, most of them also offer additional service, for some extra "tip" for the girl. At one end you have also the hairdresser / massage / hand job shops. Actual sex is not usually on the menu at these places, but hand over your 100-200RMB and you’ll get a cursory massage followed by a hand job, sometimes a blow job. The precise technique varies with some establishments using massage oils or alternate hot and cold water.
The Chinese language doesn’t distinguish between masturbation and hand jobs, so to ask for a hand job you basically have to say ‘wank’, which is ‘dă fēijī – 打飞机’ – literally ‘beat aeroplanes’. However, it’s not usually necessary to ask. The other, politer way to ask for a hand job is ‘tuīyóu – 推油’, literally to ‘push oil’, which refers to a specific kind of massage which is generally understood to include a hand job. Your masseuse might well appreciate your using this politer phraseology.
Remember that you are in China, and that since you are the one paying, you can demand more. If the girl in a MP or a Sauna doesn't please you, refuse her and ask for a new one (if you don't speak Chinese, just use the universal signs for no – she will understand, the mama too, and you will get an other one). Many westerners feels uncomfortable refusing a girl (afraid of hurting her feeling and so on) , so many mamasan first sends their ugly ones before showing you the good stuff. Just don't hesitate, you pay, you are entitled to get the best. Most of girls in MP will give you their phone number if asked after the session and offer FS outcall. If the session was good, you can be pretty sure that the full service will be worth it (better anyway than the rushed service you get from many outcall specialists).

Gay and Lesbian Travellers
Chinese people tend to have mixed opinions when it comes to sexuality. Though there are no laws against homosexuality in China, films, websites, and television shows involving themes of homosexuality tend to be censored or banned. There is no obvious gay scene or community in China, and most Chinese are reluctant to discuss their sexuality in public, as it is generally considered to be a personal matter. In addition, homosexual marriages and unions are not recognized anywhere in the country. Nevertheless, while openly displaying your sexual orientation in public is still likely to draw stares and whispers, gay and lesbian visitors should generally not run into any major problems, and unprovoked violence against homosexual couples is almost unheard of.

Escort Services & Agencies
The Chinese meaning of "escort lady" is very different to the western meaning. In China a escort service will normally only offer a hotel massage, so don't expect to meet a high educated talkative girl to escort you. Only very less independent escort girls will offer this service (but for a high price).
You might notice a card by the telephone in your hotel room advertising ‘massage’ (ànmó – 按摩). There usually really are massage services available, but there are also prostitutes. They’ll come up to your room and you can expect to pay anything from 300-800RMB for sex.
Exactly what you get varies from place to place. Some hotels have a "standard prostitute service" where they’ll give you a hot and cold water treatment and a blow job before sex, others just strip off, lie down and wait for you to finish. Anal is almost never on the menu and you might well find you know more positions than she does. If you call the number wanting a prostitute you’ll need to say ‘wǒ yào xiăojiĕ – 我要小姐’ and tell them your room number. Payment is in cash up front.
According to UNAIDS, 0.5% of Chinese sex workers are infected with HIV. One study reported that 5% of low-cost sex workers were infected. In one part of Yunnan province, the infection rate is estimated to be as high as 7%. The Chinese government has initiated programs to educate sex workers in HIV/AIDS prevention.
Rising HIV/AIDS rates among Chinese's elderly has been partially attributed to the use of sex workers.
China is a huge country that shows a huge regional difference in crime rates but in general it poses no more risk than most western countries. Although you may hear locals complaining about increasing crime rates, violent crime remains rare. Many tourists will more likely feel safer in China than in their home country.
Healthcare for foreigners
Most major Chinese cities have clinics and hospitals that are more appropriate for foreigners, with English speaking and Western qualified staff. Although expensive, it is worth identifying them whenever you plan to stay in an area for a significant time. For non-urgent medical treatment, you may want to consider traveling to Hong Kong, Taiwan or South Korea for a higher standard of treatment which may not be particularly more expensive.
